When is a basic assessment and screening a good choice?

A basic assessment and developmental screening will be suitable when:

A child is not meeting expected milestones (e.g,. not speaking, writing, reading, or any other expected behaviors at a level appropriate to their age).
Displaying mental or emotional difficulties (e.g., difficulties paying attention, always “on the go” and full of energy, frequent temper tantrums, always crying).
Parents require good advice on how to address their child’s concerns.

What are the outcomes of the basic assessment and screening session?

Parents can expect to receive immediate feedback on:

Preliminary insights into the child’s current functioning in various areas, including social, physical, cognitive, emotional, and speech-communication.
Outcome of screening for potential neurodevelopmental or psychological disorders (e.g., learning disorders, Autism, ADHD, depression, etc.).
If further assessment is required (e.g., standardized cognitive or achievement tests).
Practical steps that parents can begin applying to assist their child.

What to expect during the session?

The assessment begins as soon as the child and caregiver enter the center. Parents or caregivers will be given a background history form to fill out while the child plays in the waiting area. Afterward, both the parents and the child will be ushered into the assessment or therapy room. The psychologist will start with an intake interview with the parents to gather detailed information about the child, which takes approximately 30 minutes. During this time, the psychologist will also closely observe how the child interacts with their environment, family members, and the psychologist. Depending on the child’s age, the psychologist will then have a one-on-one interaction with the child in the room while the parents wait outside. This interaction lasts about 30 to 40 minutes. Finally, the parents will be brought back into the room to discuss the outcome of the assessment and the next steps, which may include further assessments or therapy.

What is the recommended age group and duration of the session?

The session will take 1.5 to 2 hours.

The recommended age group for this service is 18 months to 20 years old.

Bright Start Psychology Sdn. Bhd. and its professionals do not engage in cases that require assessment, therapy, provision of psychological documentation, or testimony for use in a court of law or for any other legal purpose(s).

Bright Start Psychology Sdn. Bhd. reserves the right to decline such cases. In the event that such information have been withheld from the company and/ or the clinical psychologist, Bright Start Psychology Sdn. Bhd. reserves the right to retain charged fees for services already provided and to decline follow-up of the case.
