Parent Coaching and Therapy: Addressing Parents' Concerns for the Benefit of the Child
When is parent coaching and therapy a good choice?
Parent coaching and therapy may be suitable when:
- Parents require professional psychological guidance on achieving goals related to the child’s development (e.g., parenting and child’s behavioral goals).
- Parents are having behavioral and/ or emotional difficulties which negatively affect other family members and their children.
What are the outcomes of the sessions?
Among the outcomes that can be accomplished from parent coaching and therapy are as follows:
- Improved understanding of the child and more competent application of parenting strategies.
- Ongoing guidance on what or what not to do in achieving behavioral goals with the children.
- Improved mental, behavioral, emotional, and relational factors that contribute positively towards the parent’s individual well-being and the well-being of family members.
What to expect during the session?
Parent Coaching
After the initial session (basic assessment), the psychologist will require parents or caregivers to submit relevant videos or materials related to their child’s concerns. This will be followed by setting goals to address these concerns. High commitment is required, as parents or caregivers need to take an active role in carrying out the homework (learned skills) with their child as part of the intervention. Video reviews and feedback will be provided during each parent coaching session.
Individual Therapy
In therapy sessions for parents, the goal of each session is to facilitate personal growth and development towards accomplishing personal goals. This may be related to improving mental health concerns (e.g., treatment for depression, anxiety, etc.), improving family relationships, managing emotions and behaviors that contribute towards the child’s well-being, and/ or achieve career-related goals. Several sessions of individual therapy are expected to meet treatment goals and/ or observe positive gains.
What is the recommended age group for the sessions?
Parent coaching and therapy sessions are meant for the parents of children who have been clients of Bright Start Psychology Sdn. Bhd., or are parents with children-related concerns that they’d like to address individually.
